私は「英語力でキャリアアップのカフェ会」で、多くのビジネスパーソンの相談に乗っています。
最近特に印象的なのは、日本を代表する大企業で働きながらも「正社員ではない」という方が増えていること。しかも、皆さん非常に優秀で、英語力も中〜上級レベルです。

ただ、お話を伺うと、短期間で仕事を転々としていたり、キャリアの軸が定まっていないケースが目立ちます。
一方、同じようなスキルを持ちながらも、長期的に一つの分野で経験を積み重ねてきた方は、確実に市場価値が高く、転職活動でも引く手あまたです。

英語ができるだけでは、外資系企業では「即戦力」とは見なされません。
求められるのは、“英語で成果を出せる専門性”と“継続して積み上げてきた実績”です。
実際、同じポジションでも外資系では給与が日本企業の約2倍になるというデータもありますが、それは“自ら考え、行動し、結果を出せる人”に対しての評価です。

英語は目的ではなく、あくまで「世界に通用する自分を表現するためのツール」。
だからこそ、英語力の前に「何を積み上げてきたか」が問われます。

キャリアの正解は一つではありません。
けれど、自分の軸を見つけ、継続して磨き続けること――それが最終的に英語力以上の武器になります。

​🔤English alone won’t advance your career
―The “ability to build up” demanded in foreign-affiliated company transitions

I advise many business professionals at my “Career Advancement Through English Skills” café meetings.
What strikes me most recently is the growing number of people working at major Japanese corporations who are not regular employees. ​ Moreover, they are all highly capable, with mid-to-advanced English proficiency.
​
However, upon speaking with them, it’s noticeable that many have moved between jobs frequently in short periods or lack a clear career focus.
Conversely, those with similar skills who have consistently built experience in one field over the long term have significantly higher market value and are highly sought after in the job market.
​
Simply being proficient in English does not make you an “immediate asset” at foreign companies.
What’s required is “specialized expertise that delivers results in English” and “a track record built through sustained effort.”
In fact, data shows that even for the same position, salaries at foreign companies can be about double those at Japanese firms. ​ This reflects the value placed on individuals who “think independently, take initiative, and produce results.”
​
English is not the goal itself; it’s merely a “tool to express yourself on the global stage.”
That’s precisely why, before your English ability, you’re judged on “what you’ve built up.”
​
There is no single correct career path.
However, finding your core values and continuously honing them—that ultimately becomes a weapon more powerful than English proficiency alone.
