🗾Are You Proud of Our Country? What Foreigners Have Taught Me About the Value of Japan

Recently, I had a conversation with friends from overseas that made me reflect on something important.

“Japan is truly an amazing country!”
I’ve heard so so so many times those words.

I often hear similar comments from foreign residents in Japan and even from YouTubers who introduce Japan to the world.

As Japanese, however, many of us rarely think about what makes our country special. I used to be the same.

Interestingly, what impresses foreigners most are the things we often take for granted:

・Clean and well-maintained cities ・Lost items being returned
・Punctuality ・Feeling safe, even at night ・Polite, kind, and considerate people

These are not everyday experiences in many parts of the world.

At the heart of these qualities is the Japanese spirit of “Wa”—the value of harmony, mutual respect, consideration for others, and cooperation.

Through my corporate training programs, I have worked with many foreign employees. I have found that many of them appreciate and respect Japanese culture even more than Japanese people do.

At the same time, many companies struggle with communication between Japanese and foreign employees.

The biggest challenge is often not English proficiency. I believe that many Japanese people find it difficult to explain our own culture in words.

That is why understanding our own culture is the first step toward true cross-cultural communication.

In today’s global workplace, I believe that being able to understand and confidently share the values of Japan helps build stronger relationships and greater trust with people from different cultures.

What makes you proud of Japan? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
