🌏 Lessons from Japanese vs. American Presentation Cultures

When you’re only surrounded by Japanese people, your perspective can become unconsciously narrow. That’s why I consciously make an effort to attend events and seminars where English-speaking people gather.

A startup-related event I recently attended was also very insightful.
The main session was a seminar on Toyota’s “Woven City” project. This ambitious initiative involves building a futuristic city in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and recruiting residents from around the world. Conducted in Japanese, the venue was packed with attendees.

The English session, however, focused on “How Startups Present to Investors.” Here, I was struck once again by the plain differences between Japanese and American presentation cultures.

🗾Japanese-style presentations
Pack text and graphs onto a single slide to convey information as accurately as possible. Emphasis is placed on the listener being able to “read the materials and understand well while listening to the talk.”
→ Strength lies in accuracy and thoroughness.

🗽American-style presentations
Keep slides simple. Include only short phrases or numbers, leaving the core content to the speaker’s storytelling.
→ The top priority is making an impression on the listener.

Even with the same “presentation,” cultural differences emerge.
In Japan, the goal is “to convey information correctly without misunderstanding.”
In America, the goal is “to captivate and be memorable.”

I find the American style very convincing, but using the same method in a Japanese business environment can sometimes be perceived as “lacking information.” That’s precisely I realized once again how important it is to combine the strengths of both approaches.

👆Accuracy of information (Japanese style) + Storytelling (American style) = Impactful presentation.

This experience taught me the importance of adapting your communication style based on “who your audience is and what their cultural background is.” This applies not only to presentations but also to English communication in general.

Understanding different cultures and adjusting your approach to suit your audience.
This, I feel, is the true power needed to thrive globally.
