🚃 Packed Trains in Japan, Subways in NYC: It’s Not Just About Commuting!
During the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work became widespread, and flexible working hours became more common.
But rush-hour trains in Japan are still packed! Sometimes, passengers are so squeezed together that they can barely stand straight.
It’s a shame that we seem to be going back to the old way of working, despite having discovered more flexible options.
US NewYork, trains were very different from those in Japan!
When I used to commute by train in New York, I rarely experienced people being pressed tightly against one another. I also hardly ever saw people sleeping on trains.
One night, however, I accidentally fell asleep on the subway, just as I used to do in Japan.
When I suddenly woke up, guess where I was? Harlem! I was on my way home after seeing someone off at the airport. At the time, this area was considered dangerous, so I was really nervous! Fortunately, nothing happened, and I made it home safely. Even now, the memory gives me goosebumps! 😅
🚄 On the other hand, Japan’s trains amaze visitors from around the world!
Foreign visitors are often astonished to see Shinkansen bullet trains traveling at speeds of up to 320 km/h and running with remarkable punctuality, just minutes apart.
What we take for granted in Japan can be amazing to people from other countries.
And I had my own little adventure after returning to Japan!
As I’ve adapted to life in America, I found it difficult to accept Japan’s crowded trains.
One day, I jumped into the space between the Green Car coaches and stayed there instead of moving inside.
When the conductor came to check tickets, I panicked and started speaking rapidly in English!
The conductor simply walked away without saying a word.
Well, this is a story I can tell now that the statute of limitations has expired! Sorry, Mr. Conductor! 😅
What can we learn from these cultural differences?
The key is to understand our differences and make an effort to communicate, even if our English isn’t perfect.
English is a tool. The ability to understand one another and build trust is what creates successful collaboration in a global workplace.
Have you ever had a surprising experience while working with or interacting with people from other cultures? I’d love to hear your stories!
