最近、昭和歌謡が海外で密かなブームになっていると知って嬉しい驚きでした！
演歌からポップスまで、幅広いジャンルの日本の歌が、性別や年齢に関係なく世界の音楽ファンに届いているそうです。

「えっ、演歌が？！」と思いますよね。 私もそうでした。
けれど、言葉が完全に分からなくても、“情感”や“雰囲気”が伝わるのが音楽のすごいところ。

思えば私も歌うのが大好きで、これまでに何度かステージに立ったことがあります。
成田空港近くのイベントや、都内の交流会で歌った時のこと、
日本人は英語の歌を、外国人は日本語の歌を歌っていました。
不思議ですよね。  まるでお互いの文化にリスペクトを込めて“交換”しているみたいでした。

私はその時、英語で歌いました。 カラオケとは違う、生の場のエネルギーの中で歌う英語は、どこか「伝える英語」になっていたように思います。
正しいかどうかよりも、どう届けたいか。 音楽が言葉の垣根を越える体験でした。

英語の歌を歌うことで発音も耳も鍛えられるし、何より“伝える楽しさ”が身につきます。
ただの語学練習ではなく、自分の感情を、思いを、世界に届ける手段としての英語。
歌は、その第一歩としてとても強いツールです。

そして今、世界の人たちが日本の歌を愛してくれています！

英語を話すことも、日本文化を伝えることも、
「ちゃんとしなきゃ」と思いすぎると、かえって一歩が踏み出せなくなる。
けれど、音楽のように感覚でつながるものであれば、
私たちはもっと自由に、自分らしく世界とコミュニケーションできるはずです。

🎵Music Links Communication Beyond Language:  Showa Songs and English

It was a pleasant surprise to learn that Showa-era songs have recently been enjoying a secret boom overseas!
A wide range of Japanese songs, from enka to pops, are reaching music fans around the world, regardless of gender or age.

“Why, enka?! you think.  So did I. But the great thing about music is that it conveys emotion and atmosphere even if you don’t completely understand the words.

Thinking back, I also love to sing, and I’ve performed on stage several times.
When I sang at an event near Narita Airport and at a social gathering in Tokyo,
Japanese people sang English songs and foreigners sang Japanese songs.
It was fun!  It was as if we were “exchanging” songs with respect for each other’s culture.

I sang in English.  Singing English in the energy of a live setting, which is different from karaoke, seemed to me to be somehow “communicative English.
It’s not about whether it is correct or not, but how you want to deliver it.  It was an experience where music transcended language barriers.

Singing English songs helps us to improve our pronunciation and ear, and most importantly, it gives us the joy of communicating.
English isn’t just language practice, but a means to convey one’s feelings and thoughts to the world.  And singing is a very powerful tool as a first step.

Now, people around the world are loving Japanese songs!

Speaking English and communicating Japanese culture are both important.
If you think too much that you “have to do it right,” you’ll never be able to take the first step.
However, if we can connect with the world through our senses like music,
we can communicate with the world more freely and in our own way.
