【👆Why Do Foreign Employees Fail to Understand the Same Instructions? The Core Issue】

Every time I meet and talk with people from various countries, the following joke comes to mind.

Are you familiar with the famous “ethnic joke” about the Titanic sinking?

It’s a joke based on the premise that the captain uses “different words” for each nationality to urge them to jump into the sea from the sinking ship.

・To Americans: “If you jump now, you can be a hero!”
・To Germans: “This is the rule. You must jump.”
・To Italians: “The ladies have already jumped!”
・To Japanese: “Everyone else has already jumped.”

It’s a funny story, but it actually pinpoints each nation’s values and behavioral principles with surprising accuracy.

And here’s the crucial point: Many Japanese companies unconsciously use “phrases that work on Japanese people” even with foreign employees, failing to adapt their approach.

・Expecting them to act based on subtle cues
・Expecting them to read the room
・Assuming tacit understanding

This approach generates high productivity in Japan. But it completely fails with people operating on different assumptions.

When foreign employees seem “assertive” or “unwilling to follow instructions,” the problem is likely not language ability, but pressing the wrong motivational button.

Cross-cultural communication isn’t about “being nice” or “speaking perfect English.”

It’s about understanding why the other person acts the way they do and strategically changing how you communicate.
The Titanic joke lightly, yet sharply, teaches us this essential truth.
