「I love this, and I thought you might like it too.」

Does That Phrase Create “Rude Japanese People”? — The Pitfalls of Cross-Cultural Communication Seen in Valentine’s Day💖

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. I received smart Valentine’s greetings from foreign men.

In Japan, it’s generally understood as “a day when women give chocolate to men they like,” but in Western countries, it’s a day for men to express their love to women. Even the same event can have completely opposite meanings and roles.

In fact, this very “difference in underlying assumptions” is the root cause of the disconnects occurring in business settings.

For example, in Japan, when giving a gift, people often say, “It’s nothing special, but…”
Overseas, however, this is taken literally: “If it’s nothing special, why are you giving it to me?”

In English, you’d say: “I like this, and I hope you’ll like it too.”
It’s not humility; it’s positive sharing.

Furthermore, in Japan, people tend to use humble expressions when talking about their family, but overseas, family is something to be proud of. That humility can actually be perceived as “a rude person who insults their family.”

The important point here is that this isn’t an English proficiency issue.

Having taught English and communication to business professionals for years, I’ve seen that the most common challenge in companies isn’t “language skills” but a lack of cultural understanding.
We’re in an era requiring a “dual approach” – the ability to switch between Japanese-style and global-style communication.

As foreign employees increase, organizations that can adapt themselves are the strongest.
Has Japanese-style communication become the “norm” in your workplace?
