🤡 Experience the feeling of studying abroad in Shibuya—what I learned from English stand-up comedy
I had the experience of laughing in English!
The other day, I went to Tokyo Comedy Bar (Shibuya), which I had wanted to visit for a long time, with my students. The theme was “English comedy based on Japan.” The venue was sold out with 40 seats, and temporary seats were even prepared due to the huge turnout.
The MC was an American who has lived in Japan for over 20 years. From his manner of speaking and demeanor, I felt as though I were in America. Fortunately, I was seated in the front row and was frequently called upon by the MC to respond in English on the spot. Though it was a different kind of tension from my usual training environment, I was able to engage in conversation and enjoy the event alongside the audience.
What stood out most was the Japanese quiz. When asked to name vegetables, I responded immediately in English. There was also some back-and-forth with the MC, but this was honestly a quite challenging task. Even if you can speak English “normally,” it’s often difficult to respond instantly. That’s why this experience was an important opportunity to understand my current state and think about the next step.
The audience was also diverse. There was an American couple from San Antonio with a gender-reversed lifestyle, a German woman with tattoos all over her body who holds a Japanese Language Proficiency Test N2 certificate, and a British comedian with a long beard… Being in the same space as people I wouldn’t encounter in my daily life in Japan made me strongly feel like I was in a different culture.
What I strongly learned from this experience is that it’s not “perfect English” but the experience of speaking spontaneously that leads to practical skills. Of course, not everyone can do improvised joke, but just being in that situation makes it clear where your English needs improvement and what skills you need.
You don’t have to go abroad to have such an intense cross-cultural experience in Shibuya.
Why not give it a try and join me for a casual “laugh in English” event?
It’s not just entertainment—it’s an experience directly connected to learning business English.
