私は長年、企業向けの異文化理解・ビジネス英語研修を通じて、多くのビジネスパーソンを指導してきました。そこで目の当たりにするのは、スポーツ界の快進撃とは対照的な、日本人の「遠慮」と「沈黙」です。

I couldn’t help but shout. It wasn’t an April Fool’s joke!!
Japan’s national football team defeated England at the legendary Wembley Stadium.
In the world of baseball, Shohei Ohtani and many other Japanese players are not just participating; they are dominating the Major Leagues.
​
There was a time when “physical disadvantage” was seen as an insurmountable wall. Today, Japanese athletes have overcome those barriers, performing with confidence at the very top of the world stage. As a Japanese person, I couldn’t be prouder!
​
But when we shift our perspective to the “business world,” can we stand just as tall?
​
Having spent many years conducting cross-cultural communication and business English training for corporations, I have coached countless professionals. What I witness in the boardroom, however, is a sharp contrast to the breakthroughs in sports: it is the “hesitation” and “silence” of Japanese business people.
​
• “Humility” is often misinterpreted as “passivity.”
• Being overly accommodating leads to sacrificing company interests.
• Fighting a battle without knowing the rules of the “global arena.”
​
These are not issues of capability. It is simply a matter of not knowing the “Global Business Style.”
As Japanese athletes have proven, differences in environment or physical stature can be overcome with the right strategy and mindset. Business is no different.

When we break away from the traditional Japanese reliance on “unspoken understanding” (Aun no Kokyu) and weaponize effective cross-cultural communication, Japanese professionals will once again become leaders who drive the global economy.
