異文化の中で気づいた、思い込みの枠の外にある自由
電車の中で、なぜかよく外国人に隣に座られる私(笑)
先日もロサンゼルスから来た女性が隣に。3人のお子さん連れで、自然に英語で話が始まりました。
「実は夫がけがをして入院してて。後から日本で合流するの。」
――えっ…！
日本人なら、旅行はキャンセルして看病に専念するという選択肢しか思い浮かばないかもしれません。でも彼女は、子どもたちと先に旅に出るという“別の選択”をしたのです。
このエピソードから私が感じたのは、
・ 無意識のうちに“常識”という枠の中で選択している
・ 違う文化・価値観に触れると、その枠が揺らぐ
・ 安全なコンフォートゾーンの外にこそ、まだ知らない自分がいる
そして、英語を通してこうした気づきを得る機会が増えるほど、
視野が広がり、選べる人生の道が増えていくんですよね。
英語は単なるスキルではなく、「自分の人生に新しい風を吹かせる道具」。
私たちはもっと自由に、もっと柔軟に、選択していい。
「自分は本当に、したい選択をしている？」
――そんな問いをくれた、わずか数分の出会いでした。

✈️ Are your choices really “you”?
The freedom that exists outside the boundaries of assumptions in a different culture
For some reason, foreigners often sit next to me on the train! 😊
The other day, a woman from Los Angeles was sitting next to me with her three children, and we naturally started talking in English.
She said, “Actually, my husband was injured and is in the hospital. He will join us in Japan later.
–What a surprise…!
If you are Japanese, the only option that might come to mind is to cancel the trip and concentrate on taking care of her husband. However, she made a “different choice” by going on the trip with her children.
What I felt from this episode was
・unconsciously making choices within the framework of “common sense.
・When we are exposed to a different culture and value system, that frame is shaken.
・I am not yet aware of who I am outside my safe comfort zone.
The more opportunities you have to gain these insights through English, the more your horizons expand and the more life paths you can choose.
English isn’t just a skill, it’s a tool that can give a new wind to your life.
We can make choices more freely and flexibly.
“Are you really making the choices you want to make?”
-It was an encounter that asked me such a question in just a few minutes.
