女性リーダーとして誇らしい一方で、早朝3:00の勉強会開催と聞き、驚きを隠せませんでした。

トップが「働いて、働いて、働いていきます」と言い、それを実行してしまう。
その姿勢が社会全体に影響を与えるのは確実です。
しかし、本当に“死ぬほど働く文化”を続けていいのでしょうか？

●アメリカで起きた「残業してクビ」の話
ある日本人がアメリカで就職し、上司に認められたい一心で残業を続けていました。
ところが、その“忠誠心”が裏目に出てしまいました。
英語が流暢でも、異文化理解が欠けていればキャリアが崩壊するという象徴的な例です。

●海外の“休む文化”は人生を豊かにする
日本人の1週間休暇に対して、海外では1〜2か月連続休暇が当たり前。

さらに先日、アメリカ人の知人からこんな話を聞きました。日本で5年働いたあと、夫婦で2年間世界旅行の休暇を取った。今はアメリカの大手証券会社で大活躍。
「世界を見たことで、人間性が磨かれた」と語っていました。

働き続けることだけがキャリアではなく、
休むこと・旅をすることが視野も人格も広げてくれるという好例です。

While proud of her as a female leader, I couldn’t hide my surprise upon learning she held study sessions at 3:00 AM.

When the top leader declares, “We will work, work, work,” and actually does it,
That attitude inevitably influences society as a whole.
But is it truly acceptable to perpetuate this “work-till-you-drop culture”?
​
● The “Overtime Fired” Story from America
A Japanese person working in America kept putting in overtime, driven simply by the desire to impress his boss.
However, that “loyalty” backfired spectacularly.
It’s a symbolic example showing that even with fluent English, a lack of cross-cultural understanding can destroy your career.

● How Overseas “Rest Cultures” Enrich Life
While Japanese workers take one-week vacations, overseas workers routinely take one to two consecutive months off.
​
Recently, an American acquaintance shared this story: ​ After working in Japan for five years, he and his wife took a two-year sabbatical to travel the world. ​ Now he is thriving at a major American securities firm.
He said, “Seeing the world refined my character.”

This is a prime example showing that a career isn’t solely about continuous work;
taking breaks and traveling broadens both your perspective and character.

● Are Japanese People Being Deprived of the Chance to Freely Choose Their Lives?
I consult daily with Japanese people exhausted by work and life.
