私の周りには、頭が良くて仕事もバリバリこなす、まさに優秀なビジネスパーソンがたくさんいます。 でも、なぜかそんな方々ほど英語を「使えない」と感じていることが多いんです。 それが日本人が海外でビジネスをする上での大きな壁になっています。

ビジネスパーソンの皆さん、専門分野での知識やスキルは完璧を目指してきましたよね？それは素晴らしいことです。　でも、英語はただのツール。　海外ビジネスを円滑に進めるための潤滑油に過ぎません。

例えば、世界中から人々が集まる学会やコンファレンス、パーティに参加してみると、英語が母国語でない国の人たち—中国や韓国の方々—がどんどん他国の参加者と交流し、ビジネスの話を進めています。　その一方で、日本人はどうでしょうか？　部屋の片隅で日本人同士で固まり、日本語だけで話している光景を何度も見てきました。　これではせっかくのチャンスが台無しです。

ここで伝えたいのは、「誰もあなたに完璧な英語を求めているわけではない」ということです。　ミスを恐れず、自分の責任で相手に伝え、目的を達成することが何よりも重要です。英語は完璧じゃなくても大丈夫、十分にやっていけます。

🔤【Your English doesn’t have to be perfect!  The first step to a next stage】

🌍 To all businesspersons who are looking to advance their careers overseas

I am surrounded by many smart, hard-working, and truly excellent businesspeople.  But for some reason, many of them feel that they can’t “use” English as much as they would like.  This is a big barrier for Japanese people to do business overseas.

Why does this happen?  The answer is simple.  They take pride in their work, and they are perfectionists who will not allow any compromise when it comes to English.  They believe that if they can’t use perfect English, they can’t speak English.

But that isn’t the way to become fluent in English.  What is important is to let go of this perfectionism and come out of your shell.

As a businessperson, you have been striving to perfect your knowledge and skills in your field of expertise, right?  That is wonderful.  But English is just a tool.  It’s merely a lubricant to facilitate overseas business.

For example, if you attend an International congress, conference, or party where people from all over the world gather, you will find that people from countries where English isn’t the native language – people from China and Korea – are interacting with participants from other countries, and promoting business discussions as well.  On the other hand, what about the Japanese?  Many times I’ve seen Japanese people huddled together in a corner of the room, speaking only in Japanese.  You’re missing a great opportunity.

What I want to say here is that no one expects you to speak perfect English.  Don’t be afraid of making mistakes.  The most important thing is to take responsibility for communicating with others and achieving your goals.  Your English doesn’t have to be perfect to do well on your business.
