The other day, when I attended business networking events, I noticed something.  In Japan, business cards are exchanged first, and then business talk immediately follows.  Even at meetings, business is discussed immediately after the start of the meeting, and if drinks are served, it is juice.  This is a typical Japanese business style.

On the other hand, in Western business social gatherings and meetings, exchanging business cards is not mandatory, and it’s important to first create a relaxed atmosphere through “small talk.  Furthermore, it’s normal to have conversations over alcohol even during the daytime! This difference has a great impact on the way business is conducted.

Overseas businesspeople sometimes say that Japanese meetings seem “formal and look angry,” but this comes from Japan’s serious culture.  Conversely, in the West, light conversation with jokes is preferred even among serious conversations, and small talk is emphasized to build rapport (trust).
